Spatially modulated magnetic structures in thin films
The axial next–nearest neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model is studied for thin films of up to L = 10 layers, with a distinct phase diagram for each film thickness. The systematics of the ordered phases, as obtained from mean–field theory, Monte Carlo simulations, and low temperature expansions, is discussed. Results are compared to those for the ANNNI model in the limit L −→ ∞. PACS numbers: 68.35.Rh...
متن کاملThe aperiodic nature of incommensurately modulated structures
The discovery of aperiodic crystals is perhaps one of the most important event which has changed our vision on crystalline architectures since the discovery of diffraction hundred years ago. It was the merit of a dutch crystallographer, P.M. de Wolff, to interpret their diffraction pattern as a three dimensional projection of a higher dimensional reciprocal lattice, idea which led directly to t...
متن کاملModulated crystal structures – periodicity in more than three dimensions
The initial definition of a crystal was that it is an object with flat faces. When diffraction studies were developed it turned out that crystal consists of a highly ordered particles and it is possible to isolate a small unique part of their structure – a unit cell – and the definition has been changed to rely on this fact. Nowadays by a crystal we mean any solid having an essentially discrete...
متن کاملModulated Structures, Nanocrystals and Quasicrystals in Mg-Zn-Y Alloys
The formation of the icosahedral phase, BCC (Body centred cubic) phase and nanocrystals are seen in the as-cast alloy with nominal composition of Mg4Zn94Y2. FCC (face centred cubic) phase and modulated structures are formed in the alloys with higher Y content (10% and 25% Y respectively). These phases are analysed keeping in view their relation to the quasicrystals of the Mg-Zn-Y system.
متن کاملSignature of phonon drag thermopower in periodically modulated structures
A theory is presented to interpret the phonon drag magneto-thermopower oscillations observed in a periodically modulated two-dimensional electron gas. The thermoelectric and phonon drag tensors are obtained by solving a Boltzmann equation driven by an anisotropic electron-phonon scattering rate reflecting the twofold symmetry of the Fermi surface. It is shown that commensurability oscillations ...
